How to remove all traces of Norton from your system

If you've ever installed one of the Norton programs below and wanted to remove it from your (Win98,Me,XP) system with Add/Remove programs but it wasn't successful here is the solution.

All of Norton's programs integrate themselves with other programs and throughout the Windows operating system. The most common reason to uninstall Norton is due to license expiration. Systems with partially uninstalled Norton programs will see boot errors when the system is attempting to load a missing Norton file or seem slugish due to drivers hogging system resources.

If your system ever contained any of the following Norton programs it still has many (possibly 100s) of left over files scattered all over your HD.

Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005
Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition
Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier edition
Norton Password Manager 2004
Norton Internet Security 2004/2005
Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005
Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005
Ghost 2003 or Ghost Version 9.0

To once and for all Remove your Norton program with SymNRT. This is a utility released by Symantec itself and completely safe if you follow the detailed procedure on the linked webpage. You must first uninstall your Norton product the normal way with Add/Remove then run this utility. It doesn't matter if you uninstalled a year or more ago the utility will take out every line and file left behind.

If you have ever installed the following older products:

Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier
Norton AntiVirus Professional 2003 or earlier
Norton SystemWorks Standard and Professional 2003 or earlier
Norton Internet Security 2003 or earlier
Norton Personal FireWall 2003 or earlier

The SymantecNORTON utility will not help remove these but at the bottom of that procedure page are instructions on how to remove these as well using different utilites and making some registry changes.

What is the difference between Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security? Which one is more practical? I am looking for a package that I will be able to install on our 3 computers.....for under $50.00 hopefully. I have been looking on eBay and found some Norton software fairly cheap, but I don't know the difference between Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security.

You may want to visit the manufacturer website first next time:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/index.jsp
They are set there, side by side with what is in there.

Antivirus is $40. Per year, keep that in mind, it is a license subscription, not a - buy once/keep forever - thing.
